Railway transport in St. Petersburg (Russia)

The area is served by the St. Petersburg branch of Oktyabrskaya Railway, which is a subsidiary of the national monopoly, Russian Railways. Railway transport is one of the most efficient and important means of transport for both passengers and goods and the key figures of the St. Petersburg branch are as follows:

  • 423 km of railroad tracks
  • Railway tracks and stations occupy approximately 4 hectares
  • 5 large railway stations (Baltiyskyi, Finlyandskyi, Ladozhsky, Moskovskyi and Vitebskyi)
  • 100 branch stations and platforms
  • Cargo turnover exceeded 110 million tons in 2007
  • More than 100 million passengers are served annually
