Executive branch:

The City Administration is the superior executive body of St. Petersburg headed by the Governor. The St. Petersburg Administration is formed by the Governor, the Government, the Governor's Chancellery, the city committees and the administrative-territorial departments of the Administration subordinate to him. The President of the Russian Federation appoints the Governor for a term of 5 years. The Government of St. Petersburg consists of no more than 15 members and 7 vice governors among them.

The Governor of St. Petersburg is Matvienko Valentina Ivanovna (elected on October 5, 2003).

Legislative branch:

The Legislative Assembly of St. Petersburg is the standing effective supreme and sole legislative (representative) body of the state authority in St. Petersburg. The Assembly consists of 50 deputies elected for the term of 5 years on one-mandate districts.

The Chairman of the Legislative Assembly of St. Petersburg is Tulpanov Vadim Albertovich (elected on January 15, 2003)

Marja Mustajarvi first arrived in Russia 14 years ago to work in one of the world’s largest visa processing centres – the Finnish consulate in St. Petersburg. She became hooked on the city and moved into tourism, working for the Finnish travel agency Saimaa Travel Net. We met up with her to find out just how close the two neighbouring countries are.
