Mechanical engineering and metal working in St.Petersburg (Russia)

In 2008 the machine building and metal working sector accounted for almost 50% of the total value of goods dispatched in the processing industry of St. Petersburg, i.e. 347,3 billion RUB. The figure increased by 22,4% compared to the level of 2007 (in current prices).

Since its foundation St. Petersburg was planned as an industrial centre. During the 20th century the machine building and metal working sector focused mainly on high-tech and military products. As a result of this, key research institutions and production enterprises are concentrated in St. Petersburg.

In 2008 the value of the dispatched goods grew by 56,8% in machinery and equipment manufacturing, by 39,4% in metal branch, by 30,8% in transport machine building and by 8,2% in electrical, electronic and optical equipment manufacturing.

More than 146 thousand people were employed in mechanical engineering branch in 2008. The number of employed in metal working branch comprised 38 thousand people.
