Business sectors in St. Petersburg (Russia)

Here you will find information on the main business sectors in St. Petersburg - the business sectors which account for a large proportion of the Gross Regional Product, employment opportunities and which experience a fairly high growth rate in turnover. More then 276 thousand medium-sized and small enterprises with turnover of 981 milliard RUB play an increasingly important role within these sectors as suppliers of various goods and services.

In 2009 St. Petersburg GRP comprised more than 1467 billion RUB (in current prices) making up about 103% of previous year’s index (in 2008 GRP was about 1420.8 billion RUB 40% in the total GRP of the North-Western Federal District).

In the structure of economic activity in St. Petersburg the leading sectors are the following: wholesale and retail trade, repair of motor vehicles that have a share of 22,9% in the total volume of St. Petersburg GRP and industrial manufacturing with the share of 19,9%. These sectors significantly exceed real estate activities, transportation and communication and construction that account for 16,0%, 12,2% and 7,8% respectively (2008).

The industrial manufacturing sector accounts for almost 23,6% of St. Petersburg GRP and 20% of total employment. There are more than 700 large and medium-sized enterprises and 20 thousand small enterprises.

In 2008 the share of goods produced by manufacturing branches the structure of total industrial production comprised 84,3%.
